Rebecca Hall, known for her roles in “Christine,” “The Town,” and “Vicky Christina Barcelona,” is set to star in the BBC’s latest commission, “The Listeners.” The series, based on Jordan Tannahill’s novel, has also seen Tannahill himself penning the adaptation.

Under the production banner of Element Pictures, a Fremantle company behind hits like “Normal People” and “The Favourite,” and helmed by director Janicza Bravo, known for “Zola” and “Mrs America,” “The Listeners” promises to captivate audiences on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

The plot revolves around Claire, portrayed by Rebecca Hall, a beloved English teacher, who becomes plagued by a mysterious low-humming noise that only she can hear, disrupting her life and relationships with her husband Paul and daughter Ashley. Despite seeking medical help, no clear explanation for the sound emerges. However, Claire finds solace in a student, Kyle, played by Ollie West, who shares her ability to hear the enigmatic noise, forging an unlikely bond.

As the duo delves deeper into the mystery, they encounter a group of neighbours led by Jo and Omar, who also claim to hear the same sound, viewing it as a unique gift bestowed upon the select few. The series delves into themes of the unknown, human connection, and the rise of conspiracy culture in Western society.

Shot in Greater Manchester, the series boasts a stellar ensemble cast including Prasanna Puwanarajah, Amr Waked, Gayle Rankin, Mia Tharia, Franc Ashman, Samuel Edward Cook, Karen Henthorn, Lucy Sheen, and Ian Mercer.

Ed Guiney, Executive Producer, of Element Pictures says: “When we first read Jordan’s book we were immediately captured by his extraordinary prose and ability to weave the complexities of themes of community, conspiracy, and faith through such beautifully rendered, achingly real characters. We are thrilled to have the brilliant Janicza Bravo directing, and to be working with the BBC again along with our partners at Fremantle on this truly special series.”

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, says: “The Listeners is a captivating story that has been brought to life in this gripping adaptation which interweaves a feeling of the unknown with the need for human connectivity. I’m thrilled to be working with Jordan, Janicza and Element Pictures and can’t wait for viewers to see this remarkable drama.”

“The Listeners” is a co-production between Element Pictures and Fremantle, with Tannahill and Bravo serving as executive producers alongside a talented team. Ed King, known for his work on “His House” and “Suspect,” takes on the role of producer. Fremantle will handle global sales of the series.
