The BBC has greenlit a fresh comedy-drama titled ‘We Go Again’ (working title), penned by award-winning writer Janice Okoh, known for her work on ‘Sanditon’ and ‘Hetty Feather’. The six-part series, based on Okoh’s play ‘Three Birds’, winner of the esteemed Bruntwood Playwriting Prize, will be produced for BBC Three and BBC iPlayer by The Forge Entertainment, a Banijay UK Company, renowned for productions like ‘The Buccaneers’, ‘Help’, and ‘Ackley Bridge’.

‘We Go Again’ (w/t) follows the story of three resiliently optimistic siblings grappling with a dark secret. As their mother vanishes, they embark on a mission to keep it hushed, determined to preserve their family unity. However, their resolve is tested as they confront the challenge of evading authorities while maintaining a semblance of normalcy under the radar.

The series paints an irreverent portrait of black working-class teenage life, unfolding as a coming-of-age narrative replete with first-time experiences, blunders, and the agonizing desire to hasten maturity. It celebrates black joy amidst the backdrop of council estates, corner shops, and the aspirations of working-class existence. With its humaneness and tender portrayal, ‘We Go Again’ (w/t) promises to resonate with audiences, pulsating with a palpable heartbeat.

Creator and writer Janice Okoh says: “It’s been an exciting and joyous process working with The Forge and BBC Three to bring these vibrant characters to television. I hope the audience loves them as much as I do.”

George Ormond, executive producer for The Forge says: “Janice’s scripts are a blast of fresh air – fearless, laugh-out-loud funny, surprising and often moving. We can’t wait to bring them to the screen.”

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, says: “Janice Okoh’s We Go Again is the perfect mix of beautifully drawn, captivating characters and a compelling plot that will have you desperate to know what comes next. Poignant, funny and full of life, We Go Again offers a distinctive new spin on the family drama and we can’t wait to begin filming in Birmingham and Coventry.”

‘We Go Again’ (w/t) was commissioned by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, and Fiona Campbell, Controller of Youth Audience, BBC Three and BBC iPlayer. Alongside Okoh, Nathaniel Martello-White will serve as director and co-executive producer. The series will be produced by Jade Taylor, with executive producers including George Ormond, George Faber, and Danielle Scott-Haughton for the BBC. International distribution will be handled by Banijay Rights.

Filming will take place in and around Birmingham and Coventry later this year.
