In a strategic move geared towards fortifying its digital presence, the BBC has named Chris Achilleos as the Executive News Editor, Streaming. This key appointment aligns with the broadcaster’s expansive plans for digital transformation, particularly in bolstering its streaming services on BBC iPlayer, BBC News live pages and bbc.com.

Achilleos is set to spearhead three pivotal teams dedicated to single-story live streams, curating and amplifying crucial broadcast moments, and the innovation of new streaming-first formats. As audiences increasingly turn to live-streamed news, this move underscores the BBC’s unwavering commitment to elevating its news offerings on BBC iPlayer, ensuring easier content discovery, navigation, and accessibility for users. The objective is to enable the BBC to promptly go live during breaking news stories, providing audiences with a more immersive experience and capitalizing on the best live moments on digital platforms.

Previously at ITV News, Chris Achilleos held the position of Head of ITVX, overseeing the news service on their streaming platform. His prior role as deputy head of digital at ITV involved spearheading innovation and the launch of digital products aimed at expanding the broadcaster’s reach to new audiences.

Achilleos played a pivotal role in the launch of The Rundown, ITV’s social media news service targeting young audiences. He also led the expansion of ITV News’ social team and served as the digital output editor. His career commenced as a producer at Sky News, where he worked across various roles, including editing the breakfast programme.

Chris Achilleos says: “I’m thrilled to be joining the BBC to lead its expansion of streaming news.

BBC News has ambitious plans to grow its streaming output, and I’m really looking forward to working with talented teams across the organisation to grow the offer for audiences on iPlayer, the BBC News website and app.”

Naja Nielsen, Digital Director, BBC News says: “Chris is an excellent leader in news streaming as evidenced by his work at ITVX and we’re delighted he has chosen to join us at this pivotal moment.

As well as extensive editorial and digital experience, Chris brings drive and imagination to this role that will be crucial as we grow our streaming offer. We want our digital platforms to be the stand-out streaming service globally for news and journalism so we are excited to see the positive impact his strong vision and editorial judgement will have as we work to realise our ambitious plans.”

Chris Achilleos is set to assume his role on April 9, marking a pivotal moment in the BBC’s quest for digital excellence in news streaming.
