Parents in the region are urged to seize a valuable opportunity by this Friday, as they can secure a discount of up to 75% on their child’s school commute for the upcoming spring term.

Northern, a prominent train operator, has partnered with over 185 secondary schools and university technical colleges to introduce the Under 16 Education Season Ticket scheme, facilitating discounted travel for students.

Through this scheme, tickets purchased offer students unlimited travel between any two stations on the extensive Northern network throughout the week. This flexibility means that the tickets are not limited to school days but can also be utilised on weekends and during school holidays.

To take advantage of this offer, parents must make their purchases before the closing date on Friday, 12 January. For further information and application details, interested individuals can visit

Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern, said: “We have a long-running campaign to encourage students to switch their commute from road to rail – and what better incentive than to lock in a price now worth up to 75%-off the cost they would otherwise pay on journeys for the rest of the spring term.”

As the second-largest train operator in the UK, Northern operates 2,500 services daily, serving over 500 stations across the North of England.
