Jermain Defoe, the former Tottenham and England striker, has joined forces with ex-Premier League striker Troy Deeney to share additional anecdotes from their early football experiences in the latest instalment of their BBC 5 Live podcast, “Defoe & Deeney Football Firsts.” The podcast can be accessed on the Players Channel on BBC Sounds.

This 12-episode series, releasing weekly beginning Monday, 4th December, delves into the highs and lows of life as Premier League footballers. Defoe and Deeney engage in discussions about the amusing, challenging, and anxiety-inducing moments at the onset of their careers. This includes their inaugural experiences of playing on television, making headlines, facing exclusion from the first team, and encountering disapproval from fans.

The podcast also explores other initial football encounters, such as a player’s first transfer, the first time football caused heartbreak, instances of missing straightforward goal opportunities, and their maiden football excursion abroad.

On the launch of the new series, Jermain Defoe says: “I’ve really enjoyed doing another new series of Football Firsts with Troy and giving fans an insight into what it’s really like being a professional player. It’s been nostalgic talking about some of the firsts in this series and I can’t wait for the listeners to hear them.”

Troy Deeney also adds: “I am very happy to pick up season 2 with Jermain. We enjoyed making the first series together and the amount of love we got just walking down the street from the public really drove us to continue the show. This new series will really take it up a level, revealing more stories that you’ve never heard before while being humorous and vulnerable at the same time. We covered a lot of ground in these episodes and we’re sure you will enjoy listening to them.”

“Defoe and Deeney Football Firsts” will be accessible every Monday, starting from 4th December, on the Players Channel on BBC Sounds.
