Mollie King is set to host the inaugural episode of BBC Radio 1’s fresh podcast titled “Where It’s At: A Short History of Girlbands”. This exclusive premiere on BBC Sounds is scheduled for Monday, 6th November, following a teaser episode release on 25th October.
The podcast will delve into the evolution of the iconic girl bands from the Nineties and Noughties. It will feature insights from some of the nation’s most beloved female pop sensations, including TLC, Girls Aloud, Little Mix, and the Sugababes.
In each episode, Mollie will explore how girl bands, including her own, The Saturdays, have solidified their place in music history. Additionally, the show will highlight how contemporary groups like FLO, BLACKPINK, and Say Now are redefining the concept of girl power for a new generation.
Mollie King says: “When the BBC asked me to choose some of my favourite girl bands from the last few decades for a new podcast series, I knew this would be the most fun project EVER and it really didn’t disappoint.
“I’ve had such a great time chatting to some of the women behind a few of my favourite girl bands. From the fashion – the crazy outfits, the high heels and the even bigger hair – the dance routines and the fun of big budget music videos, through to the lesser known lows of what it’s really like to live in the non-stop girl band bubble – it’s been brilliant to remember those times, whilst also looking forward to the future of girl band pop talent.”
Mollie King has been an integral member of the girl group The Saturdays since 2007, attaining thirteen Top 10 hits and four Top 10 albums before embarking on her solo career in 2015. Today, she is recognised for her role as a presenter on BBC Radio 1, hosting “Future Pop” on Thursdays from 8pm to 10pm, as well as weekend slots from 1pm to 4pm, alongside co-host Matt Edmondson.
The teaser episode of “Where It’s At: A Short History of Girlbands” will be accessible on BBC Sounds from 25th October, while the initial four episodes will be launched on 6th November, followed by the remaining four on 13th November.
“Where It’s At: A Short History of Girlbands” is produced by Spiritland Creative for BBC Sounds. The series is crafted and overseen by Kate Hutchinson, with Joe Haddow as the Series Editor. It was commissioned by Executive Will Wilkin for BBC Radio 1.
