Prepare for an extravagant Christmas extravaganza at The Piece Hall, as this unique heritage destination unveils an extensive winter programme featuring over 50 magnificent gigs, shows, workshops, and events to ring in the festive season.
Stars set to grace the Spiegeltent stage include Julian Lloyd Webber, Martin Kemp, Kimberley Wyatt (The Pussycat Dolls), Chris Difford (Squeeze), P.P. Arnold, The Haggis Horns, and boxer Johnny Nelson, ensuring that Christmas 2023 offers something for everyone, both the mischievous and the nice!
The already magnificent Georgian architecture of The Piece Hall will be further enhanced by the addition of gleaming decorations, twinkling lights, and an impressive 45ft Sitka spruce Christmas tree, creating an enchanting festive ambiance.
For the very first time, a vintage big wheel will occupy the courtyard, complementing the beloved Victorian carousel, now a seasonal staple. Moreover, the Christmas Markets will span an unprecedented three weekends.
CEO of The Piece Hall Trust Nicky Chance-Thompson MBE, DL said; “This year’s Christmas programme is spectacular! With performances from iconic stars from the worlds of pop, rock, classical and dance there is something for all tastes. And with family workshops, Christmas parties and children’s theatre there’s something for all ages too! We’re evoking the true spirit of a traditional Christmas with our vintage rides, Spiegeltent and classic tree.
“Come to our markets, come to a show, come to Christmas shop or just to soak up the atmosphere; come to a workshop to make decorations or a wreath, but most important of all, come to spend some time and make beautiful memories with the ones you love in the most perfect setting.”
The season kicks off with a bang in November with the perennially popular Christmas Markets. Open from Friday through to Sunday on the final three weekends of the month, they will feature musical entertainment and extended evening hours. Fifty stalls will offer the finest local artisanal products and produce to peruse while indulging in mulled wine or hot chocolate. Additionally, there will be special seasonal delights and discounts at the cafes, bars, and restaurants.
In the lead-up to the grand day, The Piece Hall will stay open late every Thursday, granting ample time for shopping at its treasure trove of top-notch independent shops and boutiques. From soaps to sweet treats, fashion to accessories, books to records, and an exceptional array of collectables and vintage items, you’ll find an unrivalled selection of gifts. Truly, everything you need to place under the tree.
All Christmas performances shows, and events will take place within the vintage opulence of the Salon Perdu Spiegeltent. This sheltered structure, with its rich dark wood, myriad mirrors, and warm red velvet glow, imparts a snug Christmassy ambience in the courtyard, come rain or shine.
In 2023, the programme boasts its most diverse lineup yet, featuring cabaret, comedy, community choirs, and classical concerts, alongside rock and pop luminaries and world-class DJs, spanning genres from salsa, soul, funk, and house to indie, brass, choral, and jive.
Highlights include debut appearances from house music maestro DJ Terry Farley, classical luminaries Julian and Jiaxin Lloyd Webber, Kimberley Wyatt, P.P. Arnold, Haggis Horns, Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra, The Mersey Beatles, Chris Difford and Melvin Duffy, Live Killers, and Dick and Dom. Anticipation is high for the Loafers Xmas Party, featuring acoustic sets by The Seahorses’ Chris Helme and Nigel Clark from Dodgy, alongside indie and Northern Soul DJ sets.
Returning favourites Martin Kemp, Craig Charles, and Graeme Park will share the stage with local heroes Ellie Sax, Elland Silver Band, and the perfect Yuletide accompaniment – Britain’s oldest amateur choral society, The Halifax Choral Society.
The Spiegeltent will also host a superb array of festive arts and crafts workshops for families, offering opportunities to create decorations, cards, and keepsakes, some of which are free of charge.
