Kirklees Council is once again honouring the sustainable superstars of Kirklees through their second Recycling Hero Awards. The initiative aims to recognise and celebrate individuals, schools, and businesses who are leading the way in reducing, reusing, and recycling in the region.

Residents are encouraged to participate by nominating friends, family members, colleagues, young people, schools, or businesses that have demonstrated exceptional dedication to sustainable practices. This year, there are five prestigious award categories:

Recycling Hero
Young Recycling Hero
School Recycling Hero
Business Recycling Hero

In an exciting addition, the council has introduced a brand-new category – the Recycling Champion Hero Award.

This special recognition is reserved for registered groups of volunteers who actively promote recycling and waste reduction, contributing significantly to a cleaner and greener environment.

Councillor Naheed Mather, Cabinet Member for Culture and Greener Kirklees, said: “With the ever-present threat of climate change, it is more important than ever to encourage people to take action to help make Kirklees carbon neutral. I really enjoyed being part of the first Recycling Hero Awards last year, where I was blown away by the fantastic nominees in attendance

“I know that there are many people in our communities who are an inspiration when it comes to reducing, reusing, and recycling, so make sure you get your nominations in before 20 October so that we can celebrate them.”

Councillor Masood Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Environment, said; “I am pleased that the Recycling Hero Awards are back for 2023 as they allow us to recognise those who are leading the way when it comes to recycling and inspire us all to do more.

“Last year, when I presented the awards as Mayor of Kirklees, I was inspired to see the diversity in the room. From the young people to the businesses, big and small, all determined to make a positive contribution to their local community.”

To submit a nomination, interested individuals can fill out a simple online form, accompanied by a brief statement of no more than 200 words explaining why their nominee deserves one of these esteemed accolades. Please note that all nominations must be submitted by the 20th of October, as no further entries will be accepted beyond this date.

The much-anticipated awards ceremony will take place on the 22nd of November at Dewsbury Town Hall. Shortlisted nominees will be invited to attend the event, where the winners will be announced. The Mayor of Kirklees will have the honour of presenting the awards to the well-deserving recipients and runners-up.

If you know someone who deserves to be recognised for their exceptional efforts in making Kirklees a more environmentally friendly place, head to the council’s website at https://www.kirklees.gov.uk/recycling-heroes to learn more about each award and to submit your nomination.
