Normanton Leisure, a popular swimming pool and leisure centre, is set to undergo the final phase of improvement work this summer. The initiative aims to enhance the facility and promote sustainability while reducing carbon emissions. The project includes the installation of air source heat pumps, a roof-mounted solar panel, and the refurbishment of changing areas, along with the installation of new filtration and pipework.

In a bid to achieve their net zero emissions target by 2030, the local authorities have invested in the installation of air source heat pumps and a solar panel, which will contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions. Moreover, these enhancements will ensure the long-term sustainability of the pool and aid in lowering energy bills.

However, in order to carry out the necessary work, Normanton Leisure will be temporarily closed from 26 June until late September. This closure period has been carefully chosen to minimise disruption to school swimming lessons, a crucial aspect for the local community. It is important to note that the gym and fitness classes will remain operational during this period, unaffected by the ongoing renovation.

Councillor Michelle Collins, the Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, and Sport, expressed her enthusiasm for the investment, stating, “We’re really pleased to be supporting our residents by making this investment at Normanton Pool. It’ll be a great boost to the facilities, so I’d like to thank everyone in advance for bearing with us. We know it may cause some disappointment over the summer holidays, but it’s important we minimise the impact on school swimming lessons as well as getting on with the improvements.”

To ensure that pool users can continue their swimming routines, alternative options are available at other council leisure facilities. Wakefield Sun Lane, Minsthorpe, Featherstone, and Aspire@the Park in Pontefract are open to both members and pay-to-play users. Additionally, members of Aspire will be able to request a suspension of their membership at no cost for the duration of the renovation if they are unable to utilise the other swimming pools.
