In a heartfelt display of respect and gratitude, the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Gerry Barker, will initiate Armed Forces Week with a solemn flag-raising ceremony in Centenary Square at 11 am on Monday 19th June 2023.
Armed Forces Week serves as a poignant reminder to stand by and support the dedicated members of the armed forces community, including active servicemen and women, their families, veterans, and cadets.
The ceremony will feature an address from The Rev’d Roger A. M. T. Quick, the Lord Mayor’s Chaplain, along with remarks by the Lord Mayor himself. The event will reach its pinnacle when the Lord Mayor will hoist the Armed Forces Day flag, symbolising the significant contributions made by the valiant members of His Majesty’s Armed Forces.
Various events are scheduled throughout the week, including the annual Drumhead Service, which will be held on Saturday, June 24th, 2023, at 11 am in Norfolk Gardens Park, City Park, Bradford. This service is an integral part of the Armed Forces Day commemoration.
Expressing the importance of honouring the sacrifices made by the armed forces and their families, Lord Mayor Councillor Gerry Barker stated, “We extend a warm welcome to all those who wish to join us for this brief service of gratitude, as well as the other forthcoming events.”
Councillor Joanne Dodds, the Armed Forces Champion, emphasised the district’s significant population of both active servicemen and veterans. Dodds declared, “This is our opportunity to demonstrate our unwavering support, celebrate their remarkable contributions, and express our deep appreciation for the countless sacrifices made by our armed forces. We invite everyone to partake in these events as we pay tribute to our courageous heroes.”
Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Leader of Bradford Council, acknowledged the city’s profound connection with the Armed Forces. Hinchcliffe stressed the importance of unity in expressing gratitude, stating, “Bradford district takes immense pride in our strong bond with the Armed Forces. It is crucial that we unite as a community to extend our heartfelt thanks for their unwavering dedication.”
As Armed Forces Week progresses, the people of Bradford eagerly anticipate joining together to honour and acknowledge the tremendous contributions made by their brave servicemen and women, who selflessly defend and protect their nation day in and day out.
