Bradford City AFC has announced the exciting acquisition of seasoned midfielder Kevin McDonald, who has signed a two-year deal with the club. McDonald, a former Scotland international, will grace the University of Bradford Stadium for the foreseeable future after his brief stint at Exeter City came to an end.

Having joined Exeter City in January, McDonald showcased his abilities by netting three goals in 11 appearances in the Sky Bet League One during the latter half of the 2022/23 season. His contributions played a crucial role in Exeter City’s campaign.

McDonald embarked on his professional career at Dundee before securing a move to Burnley in 2008. During his time at Burnley, he played an instrumental role in the club’s promotion to the prestigious Premier League that same season. Following his successful tenure at Burnley, he spent two years in League One with Sheffield United before transferring to Wolverhampton Wanderers. At Wolves, McDonald was part of a historic squad that established a new League One record by accumulating an impressive 103 points in the 2013/14 season.

The experienced midfielder subsequently made 128 appearances across the Premier League and Championship with Fulham before moving on to Dundee United and eventually Exeter City.

Expressing his enthusiasm, McDonald stated, “It is great to finalise the deal and be a part of Bradford City AFC. This opportunity has been a long time in the making, with significant efforts behind the scenes. I am thrilled that it has finally come to fruition.”

McDonald had previously spent three days on trial at the club in January, where he enjoyed his time and took notice of the cohesive and talented group of players in the dressing room. He added, “As a footballer, I aspire to perform in grand stadiums and thrive under pressure. I take pride in my ability to deliver in high-pressure environments. My intention is not just to see out my career here; I am determined to contribute to the team’s promotion ambitions. I am eagerly looking forward to getting started.”

Manager Mark Hughes expressed his satisfaction with the signing, stating, “We are delighted to welcome Kevin back to the club. We are already well acquainted with his talents, as he spent a brief period with us on trial earlier this year before eventually joining Exeter City. His impressive performances during that time made a lasting impression on us, making his return even more exciting.”

Hughes emphasized McDonald’s combative style as a midfielder and highlighted his extensive experience in top-flight and second-tier football, as well as his international appearances for Scotland. The manager believes that McDonald’s presence will bring added determination, leadership, and goal-scoring prowess to the team’s midfield. Hughes eagerly anticipates McDonald’s return to the squad during the pre-season, expecting him to further develop his rapport with his new teammates.

The signing of Kevin McDonald marks an important step for Bradford City AFC as they prepare for the upcoming season. The club and fans alike eagerly anticipate the impact the experienced midfielder will have on the team’s quest for success.
