Work has commenced on the construction of the new Mixenden Community Hub, marking a significant step towards a thriving future for north Halifax.

The Hub will serve as the focal point of the area, providing residents with access to community healthcare services, as well as opportunities to relax, socialise, and engage in activities within the community garden. Additionally, it will serve as a venue for learning, receiving guidance, and utilising IT and other services at the new Mixenden library.

Calderdale Council and its construction contractor, Code Building Solutions Limited, are collaborating to deliver this crucial component of the broader set of enhancements outlined in the Strategic Plan for North Halifax.

Councillor Jane Scullion, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Strategy, stated; “The Council is dedicated to investing in Mixenden and the north Halifax area to support our priority of fostering thriving towns and communities throughout Calderdale.

“Observing the commencement of work on the Mixenden Community Hub site is a significant milestone for this exciting project. It brings us closer to providing residents with easier access to services that cater to their daily needs, promotes their well-being, and align with our ambition of improving life in Calderdale for all.”

Paul O’Hare, Director of Code Building Solutions Limited, added; “We are thrilled to begin the project and see tangible progress. Although the work is currently concealed beneath the ground, we are actively preparing the foundations for the new structure. Once the steelwork arrives, everyone will witness the advancement.”

Preparation work commenced in late April to ready the site for construction, and clearance of the site and installation of perimeter fencing began in early May. The subsequent phase involves marking out the building, initiating foundation excavation, and leveling the site.

Construction adheres to Calderdale’s commitment to climate action and ensures that the building meets high environmental standards.

Anticipated to be completed by early 2024, the Mixenden Community Hub will encompass a range of facilities within a single location, including:

  • A Primary Care Network Hub for north Halifax, providing community healthcare services in addition to the existing nearby GP surgery, supported by the Calderdale Cares Partnership.
  • Rentable retail or office space.
  • A community garden designed to enhance flood resilience and biodiversity, featuring rainwater collection and release systems.
  • A modern and inviting library equipped with easily accessible facilities, advisory services, and IT equipment.
